従来の凍結方法では細胞に凍結液を加えてから凍結するまでの時間が15秒と短く、素早い凍結操作が必要で、作業に不慣れな技術者には課題でした。
開発したピュアセリシン
を配合した凍結保存液は、凍結までの時間が60秒に延長した場合でも良好な生存率を示し、安定にiPS細胞を保存することができます。
コロニー…細胞の集合体
糖尿病の治療として注目されている膵島の培養には、通常添加剤として牛の血清を利用しますが、代わりにピュアセリシンを用いたところ血清と同様にラット膵島を培養できることが分かりました（グラフ参照）。さらにこの膵島を糖尿病ラットに移植した結果、血糖値が正常化しました。
ピュアセリシンには細胞の増殖を促進し、さらに細胞死を抑制する働きがあります。抗体を作るハイブリドーマ細胞の培地にピュアセリシンを添加すると、添加剤として一般的な牛由来タンパク質(BSA)と同程度に細胞の増殖を高めました(グラフ参照)。ピュアセリシンは牛由来成分のようにロット間のばらつきがなく、安定に細胞を培養できます。
検査薬に含まれる酵素や抗体は、保存環境や期間により、その機能を失うという問題があります。ピュアセリシンは酵素の凍結融解による機能低下を抑え（グラフ参照）、さらに熱や乾燥から酵素や抗体を保護する働きがあります。
これらピュアセリシンの酵素や抗体を安定化する働きは診断薬分野で利用されています。
